Generative AI is Taking the Meaning Away from Some Beloved Jobs
Generative AI, such as GPT-4 and other advanced techniques, is starting to replace jobs that people once loved and found meaningful. Examples include the automation of 3D modeling for gaming and the potential crushing of professions like journalism and coding. The job market for programmers may see a decline in salaries as AI can code faster and reduce the need for as many programmers. While automating dangerous and boring jobs is beneficial, we should question why we are allowing AI to take away jobs that provide meaning. AI should be built by humanity for humanity, rather than focusing solely on efficiency and profit. Instead, we should gradually and safely develop AI while considering which jobs people truly want to have, such as childcare and art. Furthermore, even if automation is possible for these jobs, it is not necessary. As humans, we have the opportunity to redefine and rediscover the jobs that bring us meaning. Facing the loss of beloved professions, like programming, due to AI-generated work can be painful and unsettling. It can feel like a loss of innocence, similar to discovering that something enjoyable is bad for us. However, this may prompt us to seek and value truly human experiences, such as meaningful connections, conversations, and conscious experiences.
