Short Sleep Predicts Premature Mortality
Sleep deprivation has various short and mid-term implications such as decreased performance, memory issues, reduced libido, disrupted blood sugar levels, decreased testosterone in males, impaired female reproductive health, increased blood pressure and heart rate, progression into obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental health issues, immune compromise, and infection. All of these factors contribute to premature mortality. However, excessive sleep beyond the recommended 7 to 9 hours can also be detrimental and increase mortality risk. Additionally, insufficient sleep is strongly associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease, as it predicts a higher accumulation of beta-amyloid and tau proteins, which are linked to Alzheimer's pathology. Furthermore, two sleep disorders, insomnia and sleep apnea, significantly increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's later in life.
