Alcohol consumption leads to the conversion of serotonin into acetyl aldehyde, a toxin that disrupts mood circuits initially making them hyperactive. This causes increased talkativeness and elevated mood. However, as alcohol wears off, serotonin levels and circuit activity decrease, leading to a drop in mood. Individuals then seek more alcohol to restore well-being, but after excessive consumption, the energized mood cannot be regained. Instead, further drinking leads to feelings of suppression and worsening mood.
