Building a Growth Mindset: Focusing on Effort and Analyzing Errors

The process of building a growth mindset involves devoting intentional resources to acknowledging and reflecting on errors. While it is difficult to control our feelings, we can control our effort and attention. Focusing on why we got something wrong and analyzing the cognitive aspects of our errors is a key component of growth mindset. Although ego protection and identity are important, they are challenging to disentangle from our emotional responses to undesired results. Instead of expecting immediate detachment from ego, we can enhance our cognitive response to errors, which helps to diminish the emotional response. This practice of focusing on effort and analyzing errors is the cornerstone of building a growth mindset. It is important to note that it requires more than just telling ourselves to do so.
