The Effects of Fish Oil on Depression

The omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio has a profound effect on depression and mood. An experiment on animals showed that adjusting the omega-3 omega-6 ratio led to less learned helplessness, indicating improved mood. A study on humans with major depression found that a daily dosage of 1000 milligrams of EPA, a component of fish oil, was equally effective as 20 milligrams of Prozac in reducing depressive symptoms. Additionally, the combination of 1000 milligrams of EPA and Prozac had a synergistic effect in lowering depressive symptoms.
