The key principle of storytelling is that every story must have an intention and obstacle. This applies to movies, TV shows, and even romantic comedies. To make a story more compelling, stakes need to be added. Stakes are what's at stake if the character doesn't achieve their intention. The stakes don't always have to be life or death but should convey the highest importance for the character. By making the audience believe in the character's investment in the outcome, even low-stakes stories can be captivating.
