The Primacy and Recency Effect in Short Burst Learning

Short burst study sessions have benefits over longer duration sessions. In a four hour session, there is a dip in recall in the middle, compared to better recall for the first and last things studied. However, shorter sessions mitigate this dip and result in higher average retention. Short burst learning provides more opportunities for the primacy and recency effect, enhancing learning outcomes. Additionally, attention plays a role in learning. Constant time on task leads to fading attention and decreased ability to focus and learn. Splitting learning into shorter sessions maintains attention and improves retention. Furthermore, the context of the information, such as familiarity versus novelty, can also impact learning capacity.
