Drawbacks to highlighting text when reading

When reading something new or unfamiliar, it is not effective to rely solely on highlighting to identify important information. A study conducted with students found that there was no consistency in what students highlighted when reading. The only consistent pattern observed was that students tended to highlight words that were already bolded or previously highlighted by the author.
