William Shakespeare (c. 1564–1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the pre-eminent dramatist of the Western canon. He wrote around 39 plays, including tragedies such as Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, as well as comedies and histories, and his works have been continually performed, adapted, and studied worldwide.[3][4]
