George H. Devol
George H. Devol (1829–1903) was a notorious professional riverboat gambler and card sharp who worked the steamboats of the Mississippi and other Western rivers in the mid‑19th century. In his later years he wrote his memoir, "Forty Years a Gambler on the Mississippi", recounting his exploits, swindles, and encounters with soldiers, merchants, and fellow gamblers, offering a colourful first‑person picture of gambling life on American riverboats in the 1800s.[1][2][3]
