Deep dives
Facial Recognition and Surveillance in New York City
New York City has implemented live facial recognition on its bridges and tunnels, using cameras to read faces through windshields. Despite a leaked test showing zero faces captured, the transit authority proceeded with the technology. This system extends beyond tolling and has the ability to track every license plate. Additionally, they are experimenting with reading people's ears, as a person may turn their head when they see a security camera.
Clearview AI, a facial recognition software, quietly scraped billions of images from the internet and is widely used by law enforcement agencies. The legality of web scraping is being debated since there are no clear ground rules for what can be scraped. This raises concerns about consent and privacy.
The Rise of Deepfakes and Synthetic Voices
Advancements in AI have made it easier to create deepfakes and synthetic voices that are difficult to distinguish from real ones. Deepfake voices have been used in AI hiring software, virtual assistants, and even to create interactive digital versions of deceased loved ones. Their use raises questions about consent and the emotional impact they can have on individuals.
Three years ago this week we launched this podcast on a mission to show the world how AI touches our everyday lives. It's been our great honor and privilege to make it through three seasons, a global pandemic, an unbelievable nineteen (19!!) award nominations, and a whole lot of tests and demos.
Goodbyes are very hard to say, so instead we'll leave you with some of the show's highlights and an invitation to follow us as we continue our journey with a new show called SHIFT. Sign up for updates at shiftshow.ai and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
