Deep dives
The Christian life as a partnership with the Holy Spirit
The moral life is a partnership with the Holy Spirit. We are called to surrender our lives to Jesus, allowing Him to be in control. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live according to God's commandments, even in challenging situations. It may be difficult at the beginning, but over time, it becomes a life of joy as we experience the power of the Holy Spirit carrying us along.
The call to love as God loves
Love is at the heart of the Christian life, and it means to will the good of the other. It is self-giving and sacrificial, seeking the ultimate good for others, even when it's challenging. We are called to love others as God loves us, unconditionally and with a selfless heart. By looking into the eyes of Jesus and receiving His love and mercy, we are able to extend that love to others, even in difficult circumstances.
The importance of the Ten Commandments
The Ten Commandments provide a foundation for living a moral life. They guide us in our relationship with God and with others. Each commandment calls us to a higher standard of self-giving love and teaches us to avoid actions that harm ourselves or others. While it may be daunting to live according to all the commandments, we must remember that they are the beginning, not the end, of a life of love and faith. Our focus should be on the joy and freedom that come from following God's commandments.
Embracing the cross and trusting God
Living a Christian life often involves embracing the cross and making sacrifices. It's important to remember that Jesus loves us unconditionally and desires to save us. When we fall or struggle, we should turn to Jesus and trust in His mercy. We are called to trust that God's ways are ultimately for our happiness and fulfillment. Even though the cross may be difficult, it leads to resurrection and a newness of life. The joy of following Jesus outweighs any sacrifices and self-denial we may encounter along the way.
Embracing the adventure of the Christian life
The Christian life is an all-in adventure with Jesus. We are called to go all-in for Him, not holding back or being half-hearted. Choosing to follow Jesus completely will radically change our lives and bring us incredible fulfillment. It may not always be easy, but the rewards far outweigh the challenges. We are called to be saints, to embrace the joy and adventure of living as fully committed disciples of Jesus.
The third part of the Catechism tells us how to live—how God has revealed that we are made to act toward him, toward each other, and toward ourselves. Fr. Mike and Dr. Mary Healy dive deep into moral theology, the state of our culture, and some of the stumbling blocks readers are bound to encounter in this part of the Catechism (as well as how to overcome them).
This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
