Podcaster and author Jimmy Akin joins to discuss the authority of Scripture in theology. Jesus and the apostles considered Scripture as an authority, but not the only authority. The claim of 'Scripture alone' is misleading. The chapter emphasizes early Christians recognizing tradition, oral teachings, and the Magisterium alongside Scripture.
The claim of Scripture as the sole authority is false as Jesus and the Apostles recognized other sources of authority besides Scripture.
The early Christians relied on oral tradition, the Magisterium, and Scripture as authorities in their teachings.
Deep dives
The Bible is not the only authority
Contrary to the claim of Scripture being the sole authority, the fact that Jesus and the Apostles quoted from Scripture does not imply that it was their only authority. While Scripture was considered authoritative in settling matters it addressed, it does not exclude the existence of other authorities. Other Christian denominations, including Catholics and Orthodox, also use Scripture as an authority while recognizing other sources. Therefore, proponents of solo-scriptura need to demonstrate that Jesus and the Apostles recognized no other authorities, which is not possible.
The early Christians relied on tradition and Magisterium
During the time of Jesus and the early Christians, public revelation was still occurring, and some of these revelations were recorded in Scripture. However, even if a revelation was not immediately recorded, its message held authority. This demonstrates that the early Christians did not adhere to solo-scriptura. They relied on the transmission of oral tradition, passed down before being written in Scripture. Additionally, they believed in a divinely appointed teaching authority called the Magisterium, which began with Jesus and was entrusted to the Church. This authority not only interpreted prior revelation authoritatively but guided the leaders of the early Church in making authoritative pronouncements. Hence, the early Church employed Scripture, tradition, and the Magisterium in their teachings.

CHALLENGE
“We know that the Bible teaches we should do theology ‘by Scripture alone’ (sola scriptura) because Jesus and the apostles quote Scripture as their final authority.”
DEFENSE
This claim is demonstrably false.
Although Jesus and the apostles quote from Scripture, all this shows is that they considered it an authority capable of settling questions it deals with, not that it was the only authority. Speaking of it as “their final authority” misleadingly assumes there was a single, final authority for them, but a person can have Scripture as an authority while also having…
