Can athletes learn to use the auditory information available in a sports environment to improve their performance? Can we see all around us with sound?
For those that aren’t familiar with his story, Brian Bushway started to go blind when he was 14 and now has no response to light at all. But amazingly he can still see! Brian has learned to echolocate. That is, he uses the auditory information that naturally occurs in our environment, the sounds bouncing around off objects, to localize and identify objects and events. He uses this to mountain bike, ice skate and perform a host of other activities. Now, with the help of Tom he is trying to teach athletes to do this, both those that visually impaired like himself and normally sighted athletes.
