Coffee houses arrived in England in the seventeenth century, probably from Turkey. By the eighteenth century, they evolved into an animated public square.
Men visiting coffee houses gradually took to discussing politics, commerce and diplomacy, and media and advertising too moved in soon enough.

Yet, the rise of the coffee house as a public place did not immediately lead to a corresponding rise in the popularity of coffee as a leisure drink.
