Worshiping Christ as the Priority
During the Christmas season, it is important to understand that Christmas is about worshiping Christ. Worship involves prizing Jesus above everything else and making him the priority in our hearts. The story in Scripture from the Gospel of Matthew, about the wise men seeking Jesus to worship him, teaches us the true meaning of worship. One of the obstacles to worship is our own self-centeredness and the threat Jesus poses to our own little kingdoms. To truly worship Jesus, we need to make our lives available to him as his servants and approach each day with the question, 'How can I serve Jesus and his people today?'
Choosing Jesus Over Self-Preservation
The chief priests and religious leaders in Scripture represent another obstacle to worshiping Jesus. Instead of protecting and celebrating the coming Messiah, they made the decision for self-preservation, betraying Jesus to King Herod. This reflects the impulse within all of us to prioritize our own advancement and self-preservation over Jesus. Many times, we turn to Jesus to alleviate guilt, find purpose, or have hope for the future. However, true worship of Christ means trusting that he is better than all our individual dreams and desires, even if he doesn't provide the version of life we want. It means valuing Jesus above all things, even when it goes against our own self-interests.
Offering Meaningful Worship to Jesus
The Magi, or wise men, demonstrate the beauty of a life touched by Jesus through their worship. Worship is not limited to singing songs to Jesus, but it involves offering him something meaningful. The gifts they presented to Jesus symbolize his kingship, his role as our high priest, and his sacrificial death. In our worship, Jesus desires our lives, our trust, and our commitment to follow him. True worship means orienting our lives around him, his teachings, and his calling, even when it goes against our personal desires. It is about valuing Jesus above all else and giving him the most meaningful thing we have - ourselves.
