Did Curiosity Really Kill the Cat?
So I'm sitting here looking at this Brené Brown quote in which she says “Curiosity is the superpower for the second-half of our lives. It keeps us learning, it keeps us asking questions and it increases our self-awareness “
What has me pondering this topic is that I was taking a course recently and the facilitator asked us to recall a question that we get asked most frequently, to help us identify a subject we might want to turn into a course or a book or some kind of offering.
And THE question I get asked most frequently is” How do you stay so passionate and present, alive, physical actively and engaged at your age? “
As an octogenarian, if I had to name the one quality that has kept me young, it would be that I am radically curious. Hands down.
So, what does it mean to be curious, and do you see yourself as a curious person?
Eleanor Roosevelt said: “I think at a child's birth if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift would be curiosity.” And that is a gift that was bestowed upon me at a very early age.
We live in a time that is characterized by so much information it’s been called The Age of Information. And how did we get that information?
We got it through curious minds wanting to know, curious minds exploring. And yet those of us who are consumers of that information, we're like sponges taking it all in, filling ourselves up with information.
But do we give ourselves the space for our own curiosity? Do we give ourselves the space for our own questions? Or are we only seeking answers?
In this episode, I share a lot of my personal story about how the way I was raised contributed to my not only being radically curious as a kid, but how I’ve managed to maintain my sense of curiosity 81 years later.
And we’ll do a little exercise to help you practice shifting from fear into curiosity and creativity.
P.S. Fear is a killer of both. So here’s your invitation to get curious, wonder about what might be possible for you when you go beyond your need for comfort and certainty.
