Deep dives
Interpreting the Image of God
Humans being made in the image of God is not about specific capacities like rationality but about physical embodiment. In Genesis, the word 'image,' translated as Selam in Hebrew, denotes a concrete representation, akin to idols in ancient temples. This physical representation extends to humanity's role in visibly reflecting God's righteous rule to creation.
Implications of the Fall
The concept of the image of God is not lost or destroyed at the Fall; rather, it's the glory associated with it that diminishes due to human misalignment with God's intended identity. Living out of sync with our created identity results in a loss of honor and glory, as we fail to reflect God's character and goodness.
Work and Identity
While work is a fundamental part of human existence, it does not define our status as the image of God. Our identity as God's image-bearers remains constant, irrespective of our ability to work. Work is an implication of our identity and an expression of our role in God's design, highlighting the importance of distinguishing between our inherent worth and the value of our actions.
Body Image and Self-Perception
The biblical perspective on body image emphasizes that our bodies are God's gift and part of His intentional creation. Our bodies, even with perceived imperfections, are meant to be stewarded and respected as integral to our identity. Understanding our bodies as sacred gifts can foster acceptance and appreciation for our physical selves, echoing the permanence and value of our bodily existence in God's design.
What exactly does it mean to say that we are in the image of God? How should that idea impact how we view things like our identity, our work, sexuality, body image, disability and transgender issues? We’ll talk about these and much more with our colleague Dr. Carmen Imes and her new book, Being God’s Image.
