Moldova's Elections and EU Referendum

Moldova recently held a presidential election alongside a referendum focusing on potential EU integration. Maya Sandu, the incumbent president, performed well in the preliminary results, securing approximately 41% of the vote, while the EU referendum showed a narrow victory for joining the EU at around 50.8%. Notably, allegations arose concerning the rigging of the referendum, with claims of 300,000 votes bought through Russian funds. The turnout was significant, with about 1.5 million people voting domestically and 240,000 in the diaspora, indicating strong public engagement despite concerns about electoral integrity.
