The Inspiration Behind the Book
Kristin Jensen, inspired by a tragic story of a mother's failed attempt to protect her children from pornography and abuse, wrote 'Good Pictures, Bad Pictures' to help parents start conversations about this sensitive issue with children. The book aims to provide a simple definition of pornography to help children recognize and understand it.
Impact of Early Education on Pornography Exposure
Children who have been educated using 'Good Pictures, Bad Pictures' show more awareness and resilience when exposed to pornography. Stories highlight how empowered children can make informed choices when confronted with such content. The book's clear and age-appropriate approach helps children safeguard themselves from harmful influences.
Challenges Faced by Parents in Addressing Sensitive Topics
Parents encounter challenges due to lack of guidance on discussing topics like sex, gender, and pornography. Concerns about offloading shame to children when addressing body exposure in images are raised. 'Good Pictures, Bad Pictures' emphasizes the importance of educating children about their bodies and potential dangers without instilling shame.
Teaching Children About Digital Safety and Pornography Rejection
Through age-appropriate dialogue, 'Good Pictures, Bad Pictures' aims to equip children with digital defense skills to reject pornography. The book provides reasons to reject pornography and educates on the dangers of addiction. By instilling awareness and empowering children, the book helps them navigate the digital world safely.
This week on the Exodus Cry Podcast, we are joined by Defend Young Minds founder Kristen Jenson to discuss protecting children from porn in the digital age. Kristen is the acclaimed author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures, a digital safety expert, and the CEO of Glen Cove Press.
In 2011, Kristen found out her friend’s oldest son had sexually abused their younger children using pornography. Distraught, Kristen felt compelled to search online for resources to warn her friend’s younger children about the dangers of viewing pornography but could not find anything. She set out to create resources for parents to address pornography exposure and consumption. As she began researching and talking to parents, she realized the need was even greater. Kristen began blogging about all she was learning, and it was out of this that Defend Young Minds was born.
