Dr Ify Aniebo and Dr Mehreen Datoo share personal experiences with malaria, discuss challenges for women in science in Africa, and highlight the progress and challenges in the fight against malaria with a multidisciplinary approach.
Malaria research faces challenges in developing effective solutions due to the complex nature of the parasite and the need to target both the vector and the human host.
Gender disparities in malaria research can be addressed by engaging stakeholders, research institutions, governments, and communities to promote equality and provide support for women in science.
Deep dives
The Devastating Impact of Malaria
Malaria, transmitted by mosquitoes, is responsible for over 700,000 deaths annually, with pregnant women and children in Africa being the most affected. The disease has a long history, infecting notable figures throughout time. Despite advances in prevention and treatment, eradication has been elusive due to drug resistance and the complexity of the malaria parasite's life cycle. Dr. Iffi Aniebo from Nigeria and Dr. Mehreen Dattu from the University of Oxford are at the forefront of the fight against malaria, with Dr. Dattu being part of the team that developed a vaccine approved by the World Health Organization. Challenges in malaria research and intervention include the need for better infrastructure and community engagement against vaccine hesitancy.
Overcoming Challenges in Malaria Research
The complex nature of the malaria parasite, which thrives in both mosquitoes and humans, presents challenges in finding effective solutions. Drug resistance in the parasite and the need to target both the vector and the human host make developing a single solution difficult. Progress has been made with the use of artemisinin combination therapies, diagnostic tests, and prevention measures like mosquito nets. However, the vast number of genes in the malaria parasite compared to other viruses complicates vaccine development. Despite these challenges, two malaria vaccines have been licensed, offering hope for future control and prevention efforts.
Women Leading the Fight Against Malaria
Dr. Aniebo and Dr. Dattu discuss the specific challenges faced by women in the field of malaria research. In many African countries, cultural expectations place added burdens on women regarding caregiving and work. Balancing family responsibilities with scientific pursuits can be demanding, and support is needed to create equal opportunities for women in science. Overcoming gender disparities requires engaging stakeholders, research institutions, governments, and communities to promote equality and address systemic issues. Encouraging community involvement, dispelling misinformation, and providing comprehensive childcare facilities are important steps toward empowering women in science.

Dr Ify Aniebo is from Nigeria, the country worst hit by malaria. She is an Associate professor with the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, where she works to improve the country's response to drug resistance and malarial transmission.
Dr Mehreen Datoo is a clinical lecturer in Infectious Diseases at the University of Oxford and she’s on the team that developed the R21/Matrix-M, the WHO approved vaccine that will be rolled out across Africa in 2024.
