Deep dives
Identity Grounded in God's Love and Calling
Our identity is often grounded in earthly things like performance, possessions, pleasure, or popularity. However, as followers of Jesus, our true identity is rooted in heaven. In Matthew chapter 3, we see Jesus finding his identity and calling from the voice of God, not from earthly sources. Similarly, as followers of Jesus, our identity and calling should come from the voice of God, not from the shifting sands of earthly achievements. Our identity is not determined by our past or present circumstances, but by our future in Christ. We are called to live up to our high and holy calling and become who we already are in Christ.
Incorporation and Union with Christ
Incorporation or union with Christ is a central concept in understanding our identity as Christians. Through baptism or becoming a follower of Jesus, we are incorporated into union with Christ, meaning that everything true about Christ is now true about us. Just as David's victory over Goliath became Israel's victory, Jesus' victory over sin and death has become our victory. This incorporation into Christ brings us spiritual blessings, adoption as sons and daughters, redemption, forgiveness, wisdom, and more. Our identity is rooted in who we are becoming in Christ, and we are called to live out this identity in our daily lives.
Living a Life Worthy of Our Calling
As believers, our identity and calling are inseparable. In Ephesians 4:1, we are urged to live a life worthy of the calling we have received. This means living up to the truth of who we are in Christ and our future identity in Him. While we may struggle with sin and imperfections, our identity is not based on our past or present failures, but on the truth of who we are becoming in Christ. We are called to walk worthy of our calling, to live a life that reflects our status as beloved children of God. This understanding of our identity fuels our journey of becoming more like Christ.
Speaking Identity and Calling Over Others
An important practice for believers is to speak identity and calling over one another. We are invited to prophesy, pray, and bless each other by calling out the truth of who we are becoming in Christ. Just as parents speak identity and calling over their children, we can speak words of affirmation, encouragement, and prophecy over one another. By doing so, we remind each other of our true identity and encourage one another to live up to our calling in Christ. This practice can be done in community or individually, and it helps shape our understanding of who we are and who we are becoming.
Who are you, really? John Mark walks us through what the Scriptures tell us about our identity in Christ, helping us step into that reality through faith -- even when our lives don't seem to live up to it.
