We must broaden our definition of trauma to include anything the nervous system perceives as a threat to life. Even if the trauma means having your toy removed from your active role, it's just mommy and daddy arguing in front of you. Even if you're alone in a room, or even if you're in a room with other people and no one is playing with you, these situations are equally traumatic as combat zones.

Whether that security comes from not having enough growing up, or from having an appearance that detracts or deters unwanted masculine attention, or from somewhere in between, where food becomes a substitute for connection, love, and emotional nurturing, it is still the symptom of trauma that the behavior's designed to fulfill.
