In this episode, Ryan talks with John Amble about the challenges Israel faces in urban warfare. They discuss Israel's urban warfare training facilities, comparisons with battles in Fallujah and Mosul, and how Hamas overwhelmed Israel's preparations. They reflect on Islamist militant groups that have shocked the world and better-prepared armies.
Urban warfare presents unique challenges due to dense infrastructure and population, requiring the IDF to employ combined arms tactics and coordinate their forces in Gaza.
The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas highlights the limitations of relying solely on technology in warfare and emphasizes the need for political context, strategy, and adaptation in armed forces.
Deep dives
The Challenge of Urban Warfare
Urban warfare presents unique challenges due to the dense infrastructure, population, and presence of combatants and noncombatants. The Modern War Institute has been studying urban warfare, particularly in the context of Israel. Israel, being a small country with specific defense scenarios, has developed expertise in urban operations. However, the IDF is likely to face unexpected challenges despite its training, as Hamas has been governing Gaza for years, creating defensive positions and a network of tunnels. Additionally, the IDF's plan to send a large number of soldiers into heavily urbanized Gaza demonstrates their intention to neutralize Hamas' military capability completely.
The Comparison with the Battle of Mosul
The battle for Mosul provides a relevant comparison to the current situation in Gaza. Both cities have similar population densities, presenting challenges to military forces. The months-long planning process for the Mosul operation allowed ISIS fighters to prepare their defenses, and Hamas has likely done the same. The defensive infrastructure, including tunnels, provides significant advantages for the defending forces. Israel's goal is not to clear Gaza but to undermine and eliminate Hamas' military capability. Although the operation may take less time than Mosul, it will still be a challenging and complex task.
The IDF's Training and Potential Roadblocks
The IDF is uniquely equipped for urban operations due to its focus on a smaller range of potential scenarios. However, the IDF could still encounter unexpected challenges during the campaign. The large mobilization of reservists indicates Israel's determination to deal a decisive blow to Hamas. The IDF's recent experiences in Gaza, coupled with their knowledge of the challenges posed by urban warfare, will shape their approach. Hamas' defensive positions, including anti-armor weapons and a vast tunnel network, will require the IDF to employ combined arms tactics and carefully coordinate their forces. The IDF's success in this campaign goes beyond tactical superiority and hinges on achieving strategic outcomes.
Technology, War, and the Iron Dome
The use of technology in warfare, such as the Iron Dome, has limitations and challenges. The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas showcased the system's limitations as Hamas overwhelmed the Iron Dome with a significantly higher number of rockets. While Israel has adapted the Iron Dome system over the years, technological advancements by Hamas have increased the complexity of air defense. This indicates that relying solely on technology to solve the challenges of war may not be feasible. The success of an armed force goes beyond technological capabilities and must consider the political context, strategy, and adaptation of the opposing force.
Ryan sat down with John Amble of the Modern War Institute to unpack the challenges Israel is likely to face in Gaza; Israel's world-renowned urban warfare training facilities; comparisons with other battles in cities such as those that took place in the Iraqi cities of Fallujah and Mosul; and how the initial Hamas attack overwhelmed Israel's preparations to defend itself. John and Ryan close by reflecting on how three Islamist militant groups have shocked the world and armies that were, on paper, better prepared than they were: the Taliban in Afghanistan, the Islamic State in Iraq, and now Hamas in Israel and Gaza.
