Deep dives
The Grim Outlook for Israel-Palestine in 2024
The year 2024 is characterized by heightened violence and devastation in the Israel-Palestine conflict, with over 45,000 Palestinians reported killed in the ongoing Gaza war. The humanitarian situation is dire, especially with countless civilians displaced and living in overcrowded conditions, reminiscent of historical crises. The destruction of Gaza is substantial, with significant areas rendered uninhabitable, and the aid that once flowed through agencies like UNRWA has faced severe restrictions. The unfolding tragedy leaves little hope for recovery or peace in the immediate future.
Accusations of Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing
Accusations against Israel of committing genocide in Gaza have gained traction, supported by reports from the International Court of Justice, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch. These organizations highlight the intentional destruction of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, further complicating the narrative surrounding the humanitarian crisis. While Israeli authorities claim they are targeting Hamas, the disproportionate response raises moral and legal concerns about the ongoing military actions. The concept of ethnic cleansing is increasingly referenced as civilian casualties mount and safe zones become targets of bombings.
Challenges to Finding a Path to Peace
The pursuit of a peaceful resolution is complicated by Israel's stated goal of completely eliminating Hamas and the geopolitical dynamics influenced by the United States. Despite previous negotiations, the chances of a two-state solution seem bleak, particularly with Israel continuing to annex territory in the West Bank. Voices calling for a diplomatic resolution highlight the significance of international law, yet the existing power dynamics suggest an overwhelming influence of American support for Israeli actions. This contemporary political landscape raises questions about the viability of a future where Palestinian rights and statehood can be realistically achieved.
Global Complicity and the Need for Change
The role of Western nations, particularly the United States, in the ongoing conflict has been criticized as complicit in human rights violations occurring in Gaza. This complicity stems not only from military support but also from diplomatic backing that enables such actions. The implications of this support extend beyond Israel, affecting international perceptions and responses to global injustices. As the despair within the Palestinian territories deepens, there is a pressing need for a shift in policy and acknowledgment of the need for genuine and equitable solutions.
While most of us can at least hope for a happy new year in 2025, the same can’t be true for the Palestinians of Gaza and the West Bank. That, at least, is the view of Michael Scott-Baumann, author of The Shortest History of Israel and Palestine. Given the ineffectiveness of the United Nations and the unwillingness of the United States to rethink its alliance with Israel, Scott-Baumann suggests, nothing is likely to change this year. So while there will be lots of talk of an Abraham Accords 2.0 under Trump, he predicts, the world’s most intractable problem will only become more miserably intractable in 2025. Indeed, given the increasing power of Netanyahu’s right flank and Trump’s indifference to the human suffering in Gaza and the West Bank, Scott Baumann suggests, things will probably only get worse for the Palestinians this year.
