Dajiling's tea industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years. The decline in yields, a political strike, and tough competition have threatened this iconic tea. The ageing tea bushes, many of which are over 85 years old, are no longer producing high-quality tea, leading to decreasing yields and financial distress for farmers. Additionally, the emergence of Nepali tea as a close cousin to Dajiling tea has posed a competitive threat. Indian tea makers started importing Nepali tea and blending it with Dajiling tea, leading to confusion and the devaluation of Dajiling tea's authenticity. Despite efforts to protect Dajiling tea with a GI tag, issues with marketing and subpar quality have hindered its success. Furthermore, new competition from Ceylon tea and a 104-day strike in 2017 have further strained the industry. The government's attempts to save the industry, such as banning blending and later rolling it back, have not provided a long-term solution. Restoring Dajiling tea's lost glory will require addressing the dumping of Nepali tea, improving yields, and providing financial support to the industry.
