Deep dives
The Importance of Need-Centered Coaching
Need-centered coaching focuses on making athletes effective decision-makers, promoting self-thinking and interdependence. It involves understanding the destination and desired player development, facilitating scanning and decision-making abilities, and promoting acceptance of feedback and adaptability.
The Challenges of Shifting Coaching Approaches
Shifting from traditional coaching approaches to need-centered coaching can be challenging. Coaches must learn to scan and read the game better, identify player behaviors, and influence team dynamics. There is a need to let players think for themselves and make choices, while also providing guidance and support. The emotional state of the coach and players plays a crucial role in this process.
The Power of Self-Review
Self-reviewing allows players to reflect on their own performance, analyze their choices and execution, and make necessary adaptations. It fosters self-awareness and engagement, leading to more effective decision-making and problem-solving on the field. Players learn to recognize their strengths and areas for improvement, and the feedback they provide can help coaches gain valuable insights.
Support Structures for Coaching Change
Support structures are crucial for coaches undergoing a coaching change. Effective mentors play a vital role in helping coaches see the value of change, breaking down barriers, and providing ongoing support. It's important to establish baseline behaviors, review and reflect on coaching performances, and have a supportive framework to facilitate long-term change.
Empowering Players Through Reviews
Implementing player reviews in practice and game situations empowers players to evaluate their own performance, analyze team behaviors, and provide feedback to coaches and teammates. It creates a culture of self-awareness, accountability, and collaboration. By focusing on behaviors and decision-making rather than outcome, players become more adaptable, effective, and engaged.
Gary is joined by PDS Coach and Consultant, Mark Bennett, and GB Basketball coach Alan Keane, to discuss how they have worked together to create an environment and coaching style centered around the player.
They discuss the following:
- What is need centered & why does it influence session planning?
- How do you deal with same players always answering the questions & talking in group huddles?
- How can a coach establish if his interventions are effective?
- Why is training players in self reviewing critical within the modern game
And much more!

There will be a panel of three coaches, including myself who will look at specific areas of midfield play.
Chris Colhoun will cover attacking runs from the midfield position and his study for his UEFA B Course. David Seymour will look at the rotation of the #10 position, using examples from Papu Gomez at Atalanta. Gary will identify the ways coaches can set up session design and ideas on how to facilitate the aspects of movement and decision making on the training pitch.
