13. Productivity Hacks - how to run complex operations and live to tell the story
Running operations is tough. Things are not supposed to break, but they do.
Complex operations involve large teams, many moving pieces, and lots of customers relying on you, externally, and internally.
Managing time, setting up goals and ensuring the flow of information, keeping track of all your teams, putting down fires, managing stress, managing customer expectations…
It can be a lot.
Yet, great operations leaders manage to not only survive, but they excel at these high pressure work environments, and know how to alleviate pressure for their teams, and put things into perspective.
Joe Aurilia is one of the great. He is an Operations Executive at a cybersecurity company, and manages 270 people across 7 different countries, leading various functions in his ever expanding role. He built his US team from scratch and interviewed 500 people in a period of just a few months, all the while keeping existing operations under control.
I interviewed him to talk about what it takes to run complex operations. I learned very valuable lessons that I am certain you can learn them as well.
