Tim Flannery, monologist and paleontologist, discusses the Glasgow Climate Change Conference, carbon reduction goals, industrialization vs carbon emissions, potential mass extinction, impact of climate change on natural disasters, efficacy of lifestyle changes, and more.
Significant progress was made at the Glasgow Climate Change Conference, with key agreements to phase out coal, address methane emissions, and protect forests, potentially capping warming at 1.8 degrees Celsius.
To address the climate emergency, it is crucial to cut emissions through clean energy adoption, invest in necessary infrastructure and adaptation measures, and develop innovative solutions like restoring forests and oceans to stabilize the climate.
Deep dives
Overview of the Glasgow Climate Change Conference
The Glasgow Climate Change Conference resulted in significant progress towards carbon reduction goals. Key agreements included phasing out coal in 40 countries, addressing methane emissions, and protecting forests. India committed to a net-zero target by 2070. Overall, if the pledges are honored, warming could be capped at 1.8 degrees Celsius, a significant step forward.
The Importance of the Three Steps to Address Climate Change
To address the climate emergency, three steps are crucial. First, it is essential to prevent the problem from worsening by cutting emissions through the adoption of clean energy sources like wind and solar. Second, the world needs to invest in the necessary infrastructure and adaptation measures to cope with the current damage caused by climate change, including improving healthcare systems and disaster preparedness. Third, it is crucial to develop innovative solutions like restoring forests and oceans to stabilize the climate and avoid further deterioration of environmental conditions.
The Impact of Climate Change on Natural Disasters
Climate change is undeniably intensifying natural disasters. Rising sea levels, increased rainfall intensity, melting glaciers, and more frequent and severe wildfires are clear examples of the effects. The claim that climate change does not make natural disasters worse is misleading. While human preparedness can influence the number of deaths caused by these disasters, the evidence overwhelmingly shows that climate change plays a significant role in their escalation.
The Transition to Clean Energy and the Future of Industries
The transition to clean energy, including wind and solar power, is inevitable and offers numerous benefits. While some argue for nuclear energy or other alternatives, wind and solar power have become increasingly affordable due to mass production. Similarly, electric vehicles are poised to become the norm as they outperform traditional petrol-fueled cars in both cost and sustainability. Other industries like aviation are also exploring solutions such as transitioning to biofuels and hydrogen to reduce their carbon footprint. Overall, clean energy and sustainable practices will propel the future of industries and create a more prosperous and efficient world.
My guest today is Tim Flannery. Tim Flannery is a monologist and paleontologist. He was the chief commissioner of the Australian Climate Commission and Chairman of the Copenhagen Climate Council. He was named Australian Humanist of the year in 2005 and Australian of the Year in 2007. He is currently a fellow at the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute at the University of Melbourne. Tim is also the author of his new book "The Climate Cure: Solving the Climate Emergency in the Era of COVID-19"
In this episode, we talk about the Glasgow Climate Change Conference and where the world is at with respect to our carbon reduction goals. We also talk about the trade-off between industrialization in developing nations and reducing carbon emissions and whether we're in the midst of a sixth mass extinction. We go on to discuss whether climate change is making natural disasters worse, the efficacy of lifestyle changes, like becoming a vegetarian, and much more.
