ShotSpotter: Inaccurate Gunshot Detection System

ShotSpotter is a gunshot detection system used in over 130 cities across the country. It employs audio sensors installed in predominantly black and brown neighborhoods to detect potential gunfire. However, the system is known to be highly inaccurate, generating numerous unjustified police deployments and encounters. The alerts do not provide information about who fired the gun or any context surrounding the incident. This can lead to dangerous situations, as highlighted by the tragic case of the 13-year-old Adam Toledo, who was shot and killed by police in response to a ShotSpotter alert. The technology also disproportionately affects marginalized communities and perpetuates over-policing.
