Deep dives
The importance of power dynamics in facilitation
Facilitation is about challenging assumptions around power and control. It aims to shift the status quo and democratize power dynamics. By creating experiences that challenge power dynamics, facilitators help to shift the balance of power and give voice to those who are usually not heard.
Trusting intuition and staying current as a facilitator
One of the challenges for facilitators is trusting their intuition and balancing it with the need to stay current and fresh. Finding a community of peers and taking risks in every session can help facilitate growth and learning.
Creating a fair workshop
A fair workshop involves listening to the needs of the group and creating processes that serve the interests of the group as a whole. It requires balance between control and flexibility, and a focus on transparency and respect for diverse perspectives.
The challenge of the minimum and not getting distracted by tools
Finding the minimum required for a successful workshop is a challenge for facilitators, particularly in the context of online facilitation where there are many tools available. The focus should always be on what serves the purpose of the group and creating meaningful interactions, rather than adding tools for the sake of it.
Recognizing and embracing the diversity of participants
Facilitators need to acknowledge and honor the diversity of participants, including their different needs, learning styles, and perspectives. This requires creating a space where everyone's voice is heard and respected, and where participants feel valued and included.
Everybody in the workshop process experiences some element of vulnerability.
The client is taking a risk on your skills and the outcomes that might emerge from using them. The participants are taking a risk in showing up, bringing what they bring to the room, and trusting (or fighting) the process. You — the facilitator — is taking a risk on your work, reputation, and ability.
So why should we expect any of us to be the perfect picture of confidence throughout?
Michelle Howard helps me understand the value of vulnerability (and its inevitability) in this episode, explaining the dance between power and vulnerability that happens in workshops — no matter who you are.
