Deep dives
Christ's authority and identity
In the book of Revelation, Jesus addresses seven churches as a heavenly physician. He introduces himself in each message, affirming his authority as the Son of God, the holy one, the true one. Jesus is God himself, the creator, savior, and judge. Believers are urged to care about what Jesus says, to prioritize his verdict over anyone else's. His authority is unmatched, and believers should listen to his words.
Christ's affirmation and encouragement
Alongside his rebukes, Jesus commends the churches for their works, love, faith, service, and endurance. He acknowledges their trials and perseverance in the face of opposition. Jesus sees the good in them and encourages them to persevere. Believers are reminded of the importance of affirming and encouraging one another, celebrating the graces and gifts that God has bestowed upon us.
Christ's rebuke and call to repentance
Jesus delivers rebukes to the churches, pointing out their shortcomings and spiritual sickness. He addresses issues such as abandonment of love, compromise with idolatry, self-deception, and lukewarm faith. The purpose of these rebukes is to lead believers to repentance, to turn away from sin and turn back to God. Repentance is the proof of genuine faith and the path to restoration.
Christ's promises and assurance
In each message, Jesus promises eternal life and reward to those who conquer, to those who persevere in faith. These promises include eating from the tree of life, escaping the second death, receiving hidden manna and a new name, ruling with Christ, being clothed in white garments, becoming pillars in God's temple, and sitting with Christ on his throne. These promises offer hope, security, and assurance to believers, reminding them that their faithfulness will be richly rewarded.
