Deep dives
Invitation to Explore 9/11's Impact on Christianity
The discussion revolves around an online group exploring the changes in Christianity since the events of September 11, 2001, marking its 20th anniversary. Participants express enthusiasm about reflecting on significant transformations in faith and spirituality over these two decades. Both speakers emphasize the importance of collective discourse in understanding the lingering effects of 9/11 on religious beliefs. The online group is accessible to everyone, operating on a 'pay what you can' basis, encouraging more individuals to participate.
Significant Historical Events Since 9/11
The conversation highlights various pivotal events since 9/11 that disrupted societal norms and religious perceptions. Particular emphasis is placed on the January 6th Capitol riot, which symbolizes internal threats to democracy and underscores the role of religion in these crises. The participants note that these moments reveal deep vulnerabilities within society and religion that warrant public scrutiny. Understanding the interplay of these events aids in grasping the changing dynamics of being a person of faith in contemporary times.
Christianity's Decline Post-9/11
A notable decline in Christianity, particularly within Protestant denominations, is examined as a consequence of 9/11 and the subsequent revelation of widespread abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. Initial statistics following 9/11 showed a significant shift away from traditional affiliation, particularly among white evangelicals. The decline progressed over the years, with various reports indicating an ongoing trend towards religious disaffiliation. The data paints a stark picture of two decades marked by increased skepticism toward established religious institutions.
Civil Religion vs. Prophetic Religion
The framework of civil religion, which tends to bless nationalistic sentiments and justify wars, is contrasted with prophetic religion, which challenges societal injustices. The participants discuss how mainline Protestantism transitioned from a civil religion mindset to a prophetic one during the civil rights movement. This shift, however, also led to an opportunity for evangelical movements to position themselves as the new civil religion. Acknowledging these shifts helps in understanding the current landscape of American Christianity and its implications for future faith expressions.
The Possibility of Renewal in Declining Christianity
Key insights suggest that the decline of traditional Christian affiliations could allow for the emergence of new, more inclusive forms of spirituality. There is an optimistic tone regarding the potential for revitalization within mainline denominations that embrace diversity, gender equality, and social justice. The recent uptick in some religious affiliations is framed not as a return to former glory but as an opportunity to address contemporary issues more responsibly. Emphasizing this redemptive perspective fosters hope for a reimagined Christian narrative that prioritizes inclusiveness and prophetic witness.
Diana Butler Bass and Brian McLaren continue to be two of the most trusted and influential voices in the Church. Nearing the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the three of us decided to spend 6 weeks together online exploring how Christianity has changed over the last 20 years. Each week we will be focusing on a different theme and last night we kicked things off looking at 20 years of religious decline. Not only did Diana bring the heat in the mini-lecture, but the ensuing conversation was energizing and enlightening. Before the session ended I had members of the class asking if they could share it with friends in an attempt to lure them to join the group. I figured I would go ahead and share with you all too.
