Deep dives
Decreased shipping routes and increased costs in the Red Sea due to attacks
Certain ocean shipping lanes in the Red Sea have experienced significant rate increases ranging from 55% to 151% due to attacks on vessels by Houthi rebels. Shipping companies like Merris have extended the diversion of vessels from this area, resulting in longer shipping times and higher costs. The situation shows no signs of improving.
December PMI indicates contraction in the manufacturing industry
The December Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for the manufacturing industry came in at 47.4%, indicating contraction. New orders were down, while input costs for manufacturers increased. Employment in the manufacturing industry remained flat compared to the previous year. Timothy Fiore, chair of the Institute for Supply Management, predicted that growth in the PMI would start in March 2024.
Decline in beer consumption in the US
Beer consumption in the US has reached its lowest level in a generation, with shipments projected to be below 200 million barrels for the first time since 1999. Americans are spending more on beer, particularly on imported brands like Madelo Especial, which became the most popular beer in 2023. Other factors such as increased consumption of sugar-free alcoholic beverages have contributed to the decline in beer sales.
