In the early days of Jim Shark, the team consisted of the founder, Lewis, and a few friends. They started by hand-making clothes and selling supplements. Their first major breakthrough came when they attended the BodyPower event in 2012, where they completely sold out of their products. This event marked a turning point for the business and led to exponential growth.
As the business grew, the team expanded, and roles became more defined. From initially doing everything himself, the founder had to learn how to work with a team and distribute control. This period involved adjusting to working with different types of people and finding ways to inspire and motivate them. The founder had to reinvent himself multiple times, from being the driving force behind the business to working collaboratively and rallying the team around the company's vision.
As Jim Shark continued to grow, the team expanded to over 700 employees worldwide. They expanded into larger office spaces, established a manufacturing facility, and had dedicated teams for various areas of the business. The founder's role evolved into that of the Chief Marketing Officer, where he worked closely with team members to execute their respective roles and foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration. The focus shifted to galvanizing the team around a shared vision and empowering them to take ownership of their projects.
Throughout the journey, the founder learned the importance of adaptability, distribution of control, and building an effective team. They went from having little knowledge about finances and taxes to running a billion-dollar business. The journey involved embracing new skills, working with different types of people, and constantly reinventing themselves. The founder found fulfillment in working collaboratively, learning from the team, and witnessing the growth and success of Jim Shark.
Building a successful business requires having a clear structure and vision. In the early days of the business, there was chaos and lack of direction. However, once a leader with corporate experience joined, things started to shift. This leader understood the power of branding and the importance of creating a robust business. As he gradually became more involved in the business, it allowed the team to get comfortable with him and vice versa. Having a clear structure and vision helped them grow and adapt to new challenges.
Working with genuinely brilliant people can revolutionize teams, businesses, and brands. It's important to surround yourself with individuals who are better than you in their respective areas. By hiring great people and giving them the freedom to excel, success can be achieved. Attracting and leaving great people alone to do their work has been a key factor for successful business people. It's not about micromanaging, but rather creating a collaborative and empowering environment.
Having a clear organizational structure brings clarity and efficiency to a business. By restructuring their organization chart, they were able to gain clarity on roles and responsibilities, leading to better overall coordination. This exercise resulted in significant improvements and a better understanding of how different functions interact. Clear structure and organization are crucial for scaling a business and creating a cohesive team.
Staying motivated and achieving goals is not just about working harder. It's about finding enjoyment in the journey and having a clear purpose. Having a well-defined overarching goal and breaking it down into manageable steps helps maintain motivation. The importance of enjoying the process and setting achievable goals is emphasized. By setting the bar lower and focusing on consistency, it becomes easier to make progress over time.
"We'll look back at this period in ten, twenty, thirty years time as the moment of opportunity"
In this first ever episode of Deep Dive, Ali sits down with Ben Francis, the founder and CEO of leading UK Billion-Dollar fitness brand, Gymshark. Ben founded Gymshark at only 19 years old while studying at Aston University. With only his £5 an hour pizza delivery shift money in his back pocket, Ben went from hand making and screen printing clothes in a shed with a group of friends to owning one of the fastest growing global brands in fitness.
Once the antidote to what Ben calls a "selfish-problem", Gymshark is now the host of a global community of athletes, artists, visionaries, and innovators with a mission to inspire individuals to achieve the extraordinary. But the question is, how did he do it? In the episode Ben and Ali have a candid and in-depth conversation about building a viral brand, self-development and why the age of entrepreneurialism is now. Ben also gives Ali advice on his new business structure, offering tips on hiring, distributing control and how to reinvent yourself as a business person.
