This week, I’m joined by critic, author, and podcaster Alonso Duralde, who chose to discuss the 1982 Australian New Wave music film Starstruck. We also talk about Alonso’s incredible new book Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film, working in video stores, 80s mind-bending musicals like The Apple and Can't Stop The Music, how filmmaker Gillian Armstrong’s second film was nowhere near the vibe of her first (My Brilliant Career), the underground rabid fanbase for the film, the music in the film being written and performed by members of Split Enz and The Swingers, which bands were originally going to be involved in the film, what we hung on our teenage walls, bad 80s haircut experiences, how to sneak into a club, the confusing family dynamics in the film, the incredible Busby Berkeley tribute in the swimming pool sequence, where we imagine the characters in this film ended up, what stopped rock musicals being made for a spell and so much more.
