The Importance of Belonging
Belonging is a fundamental human need that is ingrained in our DNA. Abraham Maslow's theory of needs suggests that after meeting our physiological and safety needs, the next most important thing for us to thrive as humans is love, belonging, and connection. Loneliness and feeling disconnected go against our genetic makeup, and it is more prevalent than ever in our society. Studies show that a significant percentage of Americans, including young adults and mothers with young children, frequently experience loneliness. To belong is to be connected relationally and to know that we are loved, and it is essential for our well-being and fulfillment.
Jesus' Invitation to Belonging
The story of Zacchaeus in the Gospel of Luke demonstrates Jesus' desire to make a way for everyone to belong. Zacchaeus, a despised chief tax collector, found himself on the outside, feeling isolated and disconnected. However, when Jesus encountered him, he not only looked at Zacchaeus but truly saw him. Jesus saw past Zacchaeus's reputation and invited himself to Zacchaeus's house, breaking societal norms. This invitation was shocking to onlookers but transformative for Zacchaeus. Jesus' invitation demonstrated that he came to seek and save the lost, offering acceptance, connection, and a sense of belonging before Zacchaeus made any changes in his life.
The Impact of Belonging
Jesus' act of seeing and accepting Zacchaeus had a profound impact on his life. Zacchaeus's trajectory changed as he finally believed that he belonged. Knowing that Jesus saw him, Zacchaeus was inspired to take meaningful actions, including giving half of his possessions to the poor and making amends for any wrongdoing. This acceptance from Jesus changed the way Zacchaeus saw himself, lived his life, and interacted with others. It ultimately allowed him to thrive and experience a richer and more fulfilling life. When we recognize that Jesus sees us, it gives us confidence, security, and courage to live with hope, free from the fear of rejection.
Loneliness can be an all-consuming feeling and can put us in a survival mode where we’re just trying to make it through the day. But what if there was a way to avoid the loneliness trap of surviving and get back to—or even begin—thriving?
