If chasing profit makes products worse, why did a YouTube engineer just make money by building a better one?
Smarter Every Day has 12 million subscribers. Its video "The Problem with Capitalism" has 2.9 million views. It is also wrong about how capitalism works, and Destin Sandlin's own business shows why.
In episode #4 of Answering Capitalism's Critics, Yaron Brook goes through Destin's argument segment by segment. Yaron chairs the Ayn Rand Institute and has spent decades defending free markets. Destin says that "pushing capitalism to the max" and putting "profits over people" make every product worse over time. Yaron argues that Destin's chain-mail grill scrubber proves the opposite. Destin saw that the products on the shelf were dangerous, built a safer one, sold it at a premium, and made a profit. Yaron calls that an entrepreneur at work, and he says that is the force that makes markets deliver better products.
Yaron takes apart Destin's whiteboard "profit pyramid." He tests it against Ferrari, Henry Ford's decision to double wages, and the huge pay packages AI companies offer top talent. He argues that share prices punish short-term exploitation because they are based on expected future profits. He answers Cory Doctorow's "enshittification" theory, the claim that dominant companies let their products decay once customers are locked in. He also argues that Destin's 100% Made-in-America rule made customers wait years and pay more to satisfy a moral feeling.
Destin is a great engineer. He leaves engineering behind when he starts talking about economics.
