Deep dives
Mrs. Yadgar's Plea for Her Son's Release
Mrs. Yadgar, a Jewish woman, travels to Baghdad to meet Vice President Saddam Hussein, seeking the release of her son Dawud who was taken by the secret police. Despite Dawud's innocence, he is held in prison and Mrs. Yadgar's desperate plea falls on sympathetic but unhelpful ears.
Persecution of Jews in Iraq
Following Israel's victory in the Six-Day War, tensions rise in Iraq. President al-Bakr accuses Iraqi Jews of collaborating with enemy agencies, leading to the arrest and persecution of many. Jews face restrictions and are not allowed to leave the country. Many professionals, including Jews, flee Iraq through porous northern borders.
The Repression of Iraqi Society
The Hussein regime tightens its grip on Iraqi society, imposing strict control over education and banning books and publications that criticize the government. The Bath Party indoctrinates a generation, and dissenting opinions are not tolerated. Professionals who refuse to join the party face severe consequences.
The Reign of Terror and Political Purges
Under Saddam Hussein's leadership, Iraq becomes a police state with extensive surveillance and repression. The secret police, the Mukhabarat, carry out brutal interrogations, torture, and mass arrests. Citizens are encouraged to spy on each other, fostering fear and distrust. Dissenters and political opponents are imprisoned, tortured, and executed without due process.
Saddam consolidates his own power base, appointing friends and relatives to key positions. We hear a remarkable account from a woman whose own family was targeted by his secret police. Soon, the deputy will be in pole position to move against his mentor. And after that, Saddam will shore up the loyalty of his party with an act of political theatre for the ages…
