The Importance of Humility in Inspiring Leadership
Inspiring leadership is not just about rhetoric and personal charisma. Dr. Glenn Moody, principal of KTJ School in Malaysia, believes that true inspiring leadership lies in being humble and focusing on empowering others. He admires leaders who put the attention on their team's success rather than themselves. While leaders should aim to involve others in decision-making and empower them to make choices, he acknowledges that leaders still have a role in making difficult decisions when necessary. Overall, creating a humble and empowering environment is key to inspiring leadership.
Creating a Narrative and Challenging People
As a leader, it is crucial to establish a narrative that empowers people and reflects the organization's values and goals. Dr. Moody emphasizes the importance of consistently communicating this narrative to shift and develop a strong organizational culture. Additionally, leaders should challenge their team members by asking difficult questions that encourage them to think critically and develop their understanding, strategies, and leadership skills. These challenging conversations help individuals grow and contribute more effectively to the organization.
Removing Impediments and Fostering Growth
A significant role of a leader is to identify and remove obstacles that hinder progress and development within an organization. Dr. Moody highlights the importance of empowering individuals by providing them with the necessary resources and support, such as budgets, time, and access to information. By eliminating barriers and supporting their ideas and initiatives, leaders encourage growth and enable their team members to thrive. This approach helps create a culture of innovation, productivity, and engagement.
Developing a Coaching Culture
Dr. Moody discusses the value of coaching in developing a positive and growth-oriented culture within an organization. He shares his experience of utilizing coaching for senior leaders, middle leaders, and eventually extending it to students. By integrating coaching into the school's practices, teachers and students can benefit from ongoing learning, self-reflection, and skill development. The goal is to devolve leadership and decision-making so that individuals at all levels feel empowered, confident in their abilities, and capable of making meaningful contributions.
This episode is with Dr Glenn Moodie, Principal at Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar school in Malaysia. Born and raised in New Zealand Glenn moved to the UK in 1998 to pursue a PhD at Bristol University. Before joining Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar in 2018, Glenn was also Headmaster of Truro High School for four years. This is a fascinating conversation about the place of coaching in schools from a highly experienced school leader.
