The Myth of Comfort

In my best-selling book, Beyond the Box, one of the main messages is learning how to be comfortable being uncomfortable.  But what does that mean and how does that work?  Isn’t that a contradiction? 

 A common strategy nearly every successful person adheres to is learning how to “think outside the box”.

This is no longer a fringe idea, relegated to the shadows of polite conversation. 

 The very idea of “thinking outside the box” not only encourages, but requires, a willingness to be uncomfortable.  And stay there, take up residency there.  

 So why then, is it so difficult to do?  Why are we humans so reluctant to give up our ideas of comfort and what it affords us? 

 Why are we so attached to the things which help to soothe our overly stimulated nervous systems even when our attachments themselves often contribute to a diminishing sense of well being?

 We enter the world through discomfort; fighting our way down the birth canal, and we spend the rest of our lives seeking to replicate that mythical place of comfort enjoyed in our mothers’ wombs before we got here! 

 In this episode, I am advocating that we adjust our relationship with the idea, or the mindset piece, that being comfortable is a requirement in order to be happy or fulfilled.  

 Tune in a hear why I believe that our greater fulfillment in life lies in being willing to live from our commitments rather than from what makes us comfortable and how our comfort zone can become a kind of prison.
