Deep dives
Ethical concerns about generative AI
According to the GDC State of the Industry Report, 80% of game developers expressed ethical concerns regarding generative AI. These concerns extend beyond job security to issues like IP protection. The report also highlighted that 56% of developers are worried about future layoffs, which is an all-time high. Interestingly, the report showed that younger developers are now 157% more likely to support unionization as a means to combat job loss.
Impact of AI on game development disciplines
The report revealed that various disciplines within game development have been affected by AI. Business and finance were impacted the most at 44%, followed by community marketing and PR at 41%, production and team management at 33%, programming at 25%, game design at 21%, and narrative and writing at 13%. Although the report did not mention art, anecdotal evidence suggests that it is heavily impacted as well. The report also touched on the usage of game engines, with 33% of developers using Unity and an equal 33% using Unreal. The survey indicated that 7% of developers had switched platforms in 2023, and 28% considered switching from Unity due to changes in Unity's runtime fee. Unreal seems to be a popular choice, and Unity's management needs to address community concerns and demonstrate ongoing viability to retain users.
