The translation industry can be underpaid and prioritize cost over quality, but Jimmy continues to enjoy translation because it allows him to merge his love for reading Chinese literature with his language skills.
To excel as a translator, a passion for learning, conducting thorough research, and having strong writing skills in both the target and native languages are essential, along with being punctual, reliable, and detail-oriented.
Deep dives
Translation as a Side Job
Translation has been a side job for Jimmy, alongside his studies. While he has considered pursuing translation full-time, he finds the industry to be underpaid and sometimes prioritizes cost over quality. Despite this, he continues to enjoy translation, particularly literary translation, as it allows him to merge his love for reading Chinese literature with his language skills. Although he has explored other career paths, such as web development, he prefers the opportunity translation provides to continually learn and read in his target language.
Qualities of a Good Translator
To excel as a translator, Jimmy highlights the importance of a passion for learning and reading. A good translator should be able to conduct thorough research, paying attention to cultural and historical references, to maintain accuracy and context. Strong writing skills in both the target and native languages are essential. Additionally, being punctual, reliable, and detail-oriented is crucial for success in the translation industry.
Getting Started in Translation
For those interested in pursuing translation, Jimmy suggests beginning with freelance work. Online platforms like ProZ offer opportunities to find translation jobs and build a reputation. Networking and establishing connections in the translation industry can lead to more opportunities. While a degree in translation is not essential, it can provide theoretical knowledge and networking opportunities. Jimmy encourages aspiring translators to constantly seek new connections and clients, while reading news articles in their target language to expand their vocabulary and domain knowledge.
The Translation Process
The translation process varies depending on the project. For Jimmy, working on a dating app involved using an online translation system provided by the company. Literary translation requires reading through the entire work and capturing the mood and essence, rather than translating line by line. Tools like computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools can assist with consistency and efficiency, but are not always used in literary translation. Proofreading and maintaining a glossary help ensure accuracy and consistency in translations.
