Dec 26, 2023
auto_awesome
Jimmy Akin discusses the benefits of religion and challenges the notion that religious beliefs are false. He explores the idea that evolution may have favored the development of religion, but highlights that having evolutionary benefits does not determine the truthfulness of a belief.
Religious beliefs should not be dismissed solely based on their evolutionary benefits, as they can still hold truth and offer benefits to individuals and groups.
Without conclusive evidence against the existence of God or the afterlife, religious beliefs should be respected and given equal consideration as other adaptive beliefs.
Deep dives
The Benefits of Religious Beliefs
Religion has beneficial effects on individuals and groups, but this does not mean that religious beliefs are false. If we were to dismiss beliefs solely because they have evolutionary benefits, we would be left with an impoverished belief system that hinders human survival and reproduction. Just as we accept beliefs about the poisonous nature of arsenic or the need to care for children, we should be open to the truth of religious beliefs. In order to dismiss religious beliefs, conclusive proof that God does not exist or that there is no afterlife would be necessary. Without such proof, religious beliefs should be given the same consideration as other adaptive beliefs.
The Evolutionary Process and the Possibility of Knowing God
The believer can hold that the evolutionary process that gave humans their cognitive faculties was divinely intended to enable them to come to know God. Without conclusive evidence against the existence of God or the afterlife, religious beliefs should be respected and given equal consideration. The absence of proof against religious beliefs means that they cannot be easily dismissed as having no relationship to reality.
DAY 360
CHALLENGE
“If religion has benefits for individuals and groups, why can’t we say that evolution has favored the development of religion, even though it has no bearing on reality.”
DEFENSE
Religion does have benefits (see Day 283), but this doesn’t lead to the conclusion that religious beliefs are false.
If it were possible to dismiss a belief as having no bearing on reality simply because adopting it has benefits from an evolutionary point of view (i.e., promoting the survival and reproduction of those who hold it), then we would have to dismiss a vast number of beliefs. …
