EPISODE DESCRIPTION:
Right before your life changes, something in your head starts building a case for why you should wait, or walk away entirely... and it sounds completely reasonable. In this episode, Brad reveals the five exits your ego hands you at the edge of every breakthrough, in the order they usually show up, and gives you one simple rule for each so you can catch the exit while itâs happening instead of weeks later when youâre still standing in the same place.
The closer you get to a breakthrough, the smarter the exit sounds.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- Your ego is a bodyguard, and keeping you safe means keeping you familiar, so it rarely argues with you. It agrees with you, then quietly turns your yes into a not yet. Stop asking whether the thought feels right and start asking why it showed up at the exact moment you were about to act.
- Exit 1: âNot right now.â It sounds like timing, but later is just a no being kinder. The rule: any ânot nowâ gets an exact date on the calendar or it becomes an automatic no. The ego can live forever inside âlater.â It cannot survive a date.
- Exit 2: âThatâs just not who I am.â That story is built entirely from evidence collected by a version of you who hasnât done the thing yet, which means you turned a description of your past into a rule for your future. The rule: do it once, as the person youâre becoming. Your ego can argue with a plan, but it canât argue with something youâve already done.
- Exit 3: âIâll do a version of it.â Half the plan, half the reps, the book without the exercises. It lets you say yes without anything changing, and it hands you the evidence to say âIâve tried everythingâ later. The rule: all in or itâs a no. A clean no is more honest than a halfway yes, and the gray zone is the only place the ego can hide.
- Exit 4: âI canât do this to them.â The ego knows you would never abandon a breakthrough for yourself, so it hides the exit inside your responsibility to someone else. The rule: ask them out loud. Tell them what it would take from you and what it would bring back to them, then listen to what they actually say. Nine times out of ten, the people you love say go.
- Exit 5: âAm I sure about this?â Doubt is a delay tactic. The ego only needs to keep the argument going until youâre too tired to decide, and not deciding becomes the decision. Certainty only ever comes after the leap. The rule: decide once, write it down, and only reopen it for new information, never for a new feeling. The peace youâre waiting for shows up about ten minutes after you fully commit.
