Deep dives
The concept of natural law
The misunderstanding that Christian appeals to natural law are futile arises from confusion about the concept of natural law. While there are scientific laws in nature, when moral theologians refer to natural law, they are not talking about these physical laws. Instead, they refer to the moral laws that can be discerned by reason, which is rooted in human nature. Although human reasoning may be influenced by sin and can rationalize immoral behavior, moral reasoning remains a universal human trait. The natural moral law is present in all cultures and serves as a guide for moral behavior.
