Deep dives
Introduction to the Metaverse
The first episode of season three of The Cohere Podcast explores the concept of the metaverse. The hosts, Bill and Lauren, acknowledge the various viewpoints surrounding the metaverse and express their intention to take a practical, open-minded approach to understanding and making sense of this emerging concept. They identify the need to dive deeper into the metaverse, its potential implications, and how individuals and organizations can prepare for it.
Defining the Metaverse
In their discussion, Bill and Lauren refer to a definition of the metaverse provided by Matthew Ball, which describes it as a massively scaled and interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds. They also touch on the importance of continuity in the metaverse, including aspects such as identity, history, entitlements, objects, communications, and payment. However, they express some reservations about the exclusive focus on 3D immersive experiences and synchronous interactions, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive and flexible definition that encompasses a variety of interfaces and experiences.
Web 3 and Its Potential
The hosts introduce the concept of Web 3, highlighting its roots in the commercial internet era and the transition from web 1.0 to web 2.0. They explain that Web 3 aims to shift power back to individuals by leveraging decentralized technologies such as blockchain. The discussion touches on the challenges and opportunities of decentralized experiences, including digital literacy, ease of use, and the potential for Web 3 to empower individuals to manage their digital identities and experiences.
Exploring Cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and Digital Identity
Bill and Lauren share their personal experiences and experimentation with several emerging technologies. Bill discusses his use of virtual reality through the Oculus Quest and explores different blockchain technologies, including smart contracts and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). Lauren discusses her research on blockchain, digital identity, and the cultural implications of technologies like NFTs. They both examine the transformative potential and challenges associated with these technologies and emphasize the need for further exploration and understanding.
The current Metaverse is a mirage. The pursuit of the Metaverse vision could lead us to a better Internet. On the first episode of Season 3 of the Cohere podcast, we (Bill Johnston and Dr. Lauren Vargas) frame of this season’s topic: the Metaverse. As they did with “community”, Facebook’s announcement of the company’s move to focus on the Metaverse, and rebranding to “Meta”, , speculation, and investment. Made in a move remarkably similar to their 2017 announcement that Facebook was a “community” company, it remains to be seen if Meta follows through with creating their version of the Metaverse. It is interesting to note that Zuck’s “Community” announcement from 2017 appears to have been taken down at some point in the past year (). But this season of Cohere isn’t about Meta. It’s also not (solely) about VR, AR, XR, or related Web3 technologies - it is about the combinatorial effects all of these technologies and trends interacting to shape the next generation of the Internet, and more importantly, how we create a better Internet that is safe, equitable, accessible and inspires the best of human nature instead of exploiting the worst.
