It is not a mere formality the way we receive Holy Communion. It expresses our faith in the Most Holy Body and Blood our Our Lord. This is the reason why Mother Church in Her wisdom has commanded us - it is universal law - to receive Holy Communion directly on the tongue while kneeling. In this manner adoration is visible as well as humility, reproducing in our flesh the abasement of the Divine Word.
