Not only was Eddie Aikau a local surfer and an international icon, he was also the first lifeguard at one of Hawaii's most dangerous beaches. It's estimated he saved over 500 people. So when the Hokule' he was in capsized, it was no surprise that he would risk everything to save his crew.
