Deep dives
Vladimir Putin's Nuclear Threat on Ukraine
Vladimir Putin threatened to use Russia's nuclear arsenal against any threats to the country, escalating tensions during the war on Ukraine. Moving Russia's nuclear deterrent forces to combat-ready status highlighted the increased reality of a nuclear threat unseen since the Cold War.
History of Nuclear Weapons
The podcast revisits the development of nuclear weapons, tracing back to World War II when the United States and the Soviet Union engaged in an arms race. Dr. Edward Teller, known as the father of the hydrogen bomb, played a controversial role in advocating for the development of more destructive weapons.
The Manhattan Project and Edward Teller's Role
Edward Teller's involvement in the Manhattan Project and subsequent push for the development of the hydrogen bomb caused rifts within the scientific community, particularly with J. Robert Oppenheimer. Teller's drive to advance nuclear capabilities led to the development of powerful weapons.
Controversies Surrounding Edward Teller
Edward Teller's advocacy for the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), known as Star Wars, faced criticism for potentially overselling its capabilities. Despite disagreements, some scientists respected Teller's contributions, acknowledging his complex legacy and the ethical dilemmas concerning nuclear weaponry.
Russia's war in Ukraine, and Vladimir Putin's threat to unleash nuclear weapons, has put the world on edge. In 2018 we explored the complicated history of the nuclear age, and we thought it was an opportune time to revisit that episode. Our story focuses on Edward Teller, often called "The Father of the Hydrogen Bomb". He was also the force behind Reagan's Star Wars initiative, and the model for "Dr. Strangelove". Teller was a Hungarian math prodigy who fled Hitler's Germany. In America, he became one of the leading scientists at Los Alamos, developing the atomic bomb in a race against the Nazi war machine. But while many of Teller's colleagues later became disheartened by what they had unleashed, Teller stayed the course. His story is told here in his own voice, and by many of the other scientists who created the first weapons of mass destruction.
